Anime Expo 2002 License Announcements

At the time of writing this, Anime Expo 2002 is nearing it's end. This convention is one of the largest in the USA, with hundreds of guests including many from Japan and almost everyone who is anything in the US anime industry. An expo of this size is the best place for US anime companies to announce new acquisitions and that they did in masses.
Below you'll find the short version of all the licenses announced at Anime Expo 2002. The information was obtained from AnimeOnDVD.com, so if you want the latest news and read the full panel reports, visit this site! But if you want just the facts, read on.

So what do these licenses mean?

When an anime show is licensed in the USA you can expect it to be released on DVD in the USA, eventually. Most of the anime shows mentioned above will probably be released sometime 2003 (maybe earlier) some may take some longer.
The point however is, that once an anime is licensed in the USA, most fansub groups will stop fansubbing it. For example, you can expect Elite Fansubs to stop fansubbing Ai Yori Aoshi and Soldats to stop fansubbing Chobits. Fansubs were never "designed" to be an easy free replacement for official releases. They were meant to be to make an unlicensed show more popular outside Japan so that it would be licensed. And once this is done, the need for a fansub vanishes.
Still, although the wait and the money needed to buy the DVDs might kill me, I'm still very excited these series and movies are now licensed as the DVD version will be so much better quality than any fansub. For example, did you know Chobits is supposed to be a widescreen (16:9) show? You can't tell from the fansubs because they were recorded from a normal TV ratio (4:3) channel. But no doubt the DVD version will of course have the widescreen version.
